Industry News | Japanese media: China's electric vehicle charging patents lead the world nearly three times that of the United States

2023-05-08

On May 4, Beijing time, a report released by Patent Result, a patent analysis company in Tokyo, showed that compared with competitors in any other country, Chinese companies have submitted more patent applications related to electric vehicle charging and battery swapping, and have made great progress in key technologies to make the charging experience faster and more convenient.

From 2010 to 2022, Chinese companies filed 41,011 patent applications in these areas, the report said. Although there are not many Chinese companies in the top ranking, the sheer number of Chinese players in this space makes them submit about 50% more applications than Japanese companies. Japanese companies ranked second with 26,962 patents. Germany is in third place with 16,340 patents; The United States ranked fourth with 14,325; South Korea came in fifth with 11,281 items.

Many Chinese companies seem to be focusing on faster charging times, which is a key step in driving widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Of the patents they have filed cumulatively, 17 percent involve fast-charging technology and 10 percent involve battery swapping technology, which is much higher than the 1 to 3 percent of Japanese, German and American automakers. Other areas of focus for Chinese companies include the design and control of charging stations, power transmission and wireless charging.

Hiroto Suzuki, managing partner of consulting firm Arthur D. Little's Tokyo office, said: "The rapid maturation of the EV market in China has led to increased competition among companies. The convenience of charging has become an important way to distinguish between different models. (Author/Xiao Yu)
